The myth of Prometheus serves as a cautionary tale about humanity's destructive use of a powerful element, particularly in the context of climate change. The concept of "Prometheus fire" highlights the duality of fire as both a gift that enables human progress and a destructive force that now imperils the planet through human-caused actions. As humans evolved from controlling fire for survival to harnessing it for industrial purposes, most of humanity inadvertently set the stage for a global climate crisis. This echoes the fate of Prometheus, a nearly 5,000-year-old Great Basin bristlecone pine felled in 1964 by a graduate student studying past climate events. While the tree's felling was for research and not a direct act of climate destruction, its ancient life and the student's purpose implicitly connect it to the ongoing scientific efforts to understand and address the climate crisis that the broader Promethean myth foreshadows, making both figures symbolic of humanity's impact on the planet.

The CU Art Museum’s exhibition, Fairy Tales and the Power of Wonder, is on display now through May 2026. The Museum of Natural History’s exhibition is also opening April 16, 2026.

PhD Mentorship and Female Gender Representation in Academic Mathematics

Well into the 21st century, women remain severely underrepresented in American academic mathematics, filling fewer than 1 in 6 tenure-track positions at doctoral research institutions in the US. In this talk, I’ll present quantitative work from a long-running collaboration on the role of PhD mentorship in shaping gender representation in mathematics. We draw on a rich-but-challenging data set—the Mathematics Genealogy Project—and use name-based gender inference to construct a data set of gender-inferred advisor/advisee pairs across multiple mathematical subfields. We then model this data via an explicit stochastic process which includes academic career spans, production power of PhD students, and a homophily model for the relationship between the genders of advisors and advisees. Fitting this model to data reveals gendered patterns of attrition aligned with other recent studies, as well as gendered production power of PhD students and homophily effects between graduating PhD students and their advisors, their advisors’ previous group members, and their subfield as whole. We also simulate our model forward in time to qualitatively estimate the impact of candidate interventions on system-level gender representation. Our results suggest that interventions to reduce attrition and equalize access to opportunities for advising PhD students could accelerate progress towards gender parity in academic mathematics by decades.

Abstract: The question “Are AI minds genuine minds?” invites us to examine the nature of mind itself and whether artificial intelligence meets its defining criteria. A genuine mind is typically associated with consciousness, self-awareness, intentionality, and the capacity to experience mental states such as emotions. Whether AI qualifies as possessing a true mind ultimately depends on how we define the essential qualities of consciousness and intelligence. While this question has already been raised in the 19th Century, recent progress in AI requires us to re-examine it deeply.

Bio: Moshe Y. Vardi is a University Professor and the George Distinguished Service Professor in Computational Engineering at Rice University. He is the recipient of three IBM Outstanding Innovation Awards, the ACM SIGACT Goedel Prize, the ACM Kanellakis Award, the ACM SIGMOD Codd Award, the Blaise Pascal Medal, the IEEE Computer Society Goode Award, the EATCS Distinguished Achievements Award, the Southeastern Universities Research Association's Distinguished Scientist Award, the ACM SIGLOG Church Award, the Knuth Prize, and the ACM Allen Newell Award.

He is the author and co-author of over 800 papers, as well as two books: Reasoning about Knowledge and Finite Model Theory and Its Applications. He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Mathematical Society the Association for Computing Machinery, the American Association for Artificial Intelligence, the European Association for Theoretical Computer Science, the Institute for Electrical and Electronic Engineers, and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics. He is a member of the US National Academy of Engineering and National Academy of Science, the American Academy of Arts and Science, the Royal Society of London, the European Academy of Science, and Academia Europaea.

He holds ten honorary titles. He is currently a Senior Editor of the Communications of the ACM, after having served for a decade as Editor-in-Chief.

Bio: Dr. Kevin Reardon is a scientist at the National Solar Observatory and a Research Professor in the Department of Astrophysical and Planetary Sciences. He has studied many different aspects of the solar activity, from the photosphere to the corona. He uses numerous telescopes from the ground and on satellites, from the x-ray to the millimeter wavelengths, as well as collecting data at multiple solar eclipses. He has always wanted to fly through the middle of a sunspot.

New restoration from IndieCollect. This documentary focuses on the National Black Political Convention in 1972, a historic event that gathered Black voices from across the political spectrum. Narrated by Sidney Poitier and Harry Belafonte.

To coincide with her speaking at the Conference on World Affairs, the President of IndieCollect, Sandra Schulberg, will be there in person!

They say that history does not repeat itself, but it rhymes. That may be why our turbulent and divisive times are reflected in films set half a century ago, a time of large protest gatherings and marches, many about the same social justice issues that are still contentious today: rights of people of color, rights of women, rights of LGBTA+ people, rights of people with disabilities, police brutality, end to armed conflict, accountability of elected officials. And so, we have “The Glorias,” “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” and the upcoming films “A Night in Miami,” and “Judas and the Black Messiah.” Even Robert Zemeckis’ remake of Roald Dahl’s “The Witches” is set in 1968.
As powerful as these re-creations of the events, real and imagined, of the late ’60s and early to mid-’70s are, the documentaries using archival footage of era’s advocates are even more compelling. “Sisters of ’77” documented the National Women’s Conference, with appearances by three first ladies, feminist leaders like Gloria Steinem and Betty Friedan, and a young Maxine Waters. And William Greaves’ “Nationtime” lets us see many of the luminaries at the 1972 meeting of the National Black Political Convention held in Gary, Indiana. Such a roster includes Reverend Jesse Jackson, Dick Gregory, Coretta Scott King, Betty Shabazz, Mayor Richard Hatcher, Amiri Baraka, and Congressman Charles Diggs. “The Trial of the Chicago 7” eighth defendant, Bobby Seale, makes a stirring appearance emphasizing protest and voting.
“Nationtime” is a call to action, showing us how far we have come in some ways. Jackson notes in his electrifying speech that there were only 13 Black Members of Congress when proportionately “we are supposed to have 52.” Today there are 56 Black Members of Congress (plus 42 Hispanic, 17 Asian, and 4 Native American). The speakers call on the US to play more of a role in ending apartheid in South Africa. No one in 1972 Gary even thinks to imagine a Black President or a Black/South Asian female Vice-Presidential candidate. Indeed, other than the two widows, and a mention of Angela Davis, there are very few women featured in the film and there is no discussion of the particular concerns of women of color or of other marginalized groups within the Black community.
Dick Gregory tells the crowd that the convention can be summed up by what he overheard a boy tell his friends the day before: “When I grow up, I want to be in the Black caucus.” Perhaps 10-year-old Barack Obama, then living on the other side of the world with his American mother and Indonesian step-father, or eight-year-old Kamala Harris, living in Oakland, California, were similarly inspired by this event. Now, thanks to this restored documentary, another generation can have new dreams of what they can do for Nationtime.

This presentation will deal with the design 2D p-conjugation in organic materials, their synthesis– as individual monolayers by surface-templated polymerization and as stacked multilayer materials, a.k.a. Covalent Organic Frameworks (COFs), and exploration of their electronic properties.

I will discuss the polaron formation in 2D polymers and COFs via chemical doping, and showcase the application of COF films and nanoparticles as semiconducting heterojunctions capable of solar energy harvesting in photovoltaic devices and in photocatalytic CO2 reduction systems.

In 2008, the "L," the legislative component was joined serving to track proposed state and federal legislation impacting higher education and State of Colorado employees. The committee analyzes proposed legislation in order to educate staff on both the pros and cons of the issues., Additionally, the committee organizes meetings of staff with local legislators and candidates. One of the goals of the committee is to involve more staff in the legislative process.

Abstract:

Delocalized electronic states in graphene and other 2D inorganic materials give rise to various quantum phenomena that underpin their unique transport (conductive) properties. In principle, some of these properties could be harvested in organic 2D π-conjugated polymers. This presentation will deal with the design 2D π-conjugation in organic materials, their synthesis– as individual monolayers by surface-templated polymerization and as stacked multilayer materials, a.k.a. Covalent Organic Frameworks (COFs), and exploration of their electronic properties. I will discuss the polaron formation in 2D polymers and COFs via chemical doping, and showcase the application of COF films and nanoparticles as semiconducting heterojunctions capable of solar energy harvesting in photovoltaic devices and in photocatalytic CO2 reduction systems.

Abstract:

This century is witnessing a second quantum revolution, and quantum sensing represents an area in which chemists can make significant contributions. Achieving quantum sensing requires more than precise control of quantum states at the molecular level; it is also crucial to organize molecular qubits so that they function effectively in complex environments. In this seminar, I will discuss materials chemistry approaches to molecular quantum sensors, focusing on their extension from biological systems to engineered materials.
We have recently enabled intracellular quantum sensing by developing molecular quantum nanosensors (MQNs). By encapsulating atomically optimized molecular spin qubits within biocompatible nanocrystals, MQNs achieve highly uniform spin energy levels and enable room-temperature optical detection of molecular spin states inside living cells. Compared with existing quantum sensors, MQNs exhibit superior uniformity, making absolute temperature sensing within cells possible—an achievement that has been challenging to realize with conventional platforms.
I will then show how molecular quantum sensing can be extended into chemically programmable materials. By incorporating photoactive chromophores as components of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), these MOFs enable spatial organization and chemical accessibility of molecular qubits. This design allows quantum sensors whose spin coherence times respond to surrounding chemical species at room temperature. Finally, I will discuss how controlled molecular assembly leads to multilevel quantum states (qudits). Through precise chromophore arrangement, singlet fission generates spin-correlated quintet triplet pairs with submicrosecond quantum coherence, expanding molecular quantum sensing beyond two-level systems. Together, these examples illustrate how materials chemistry transforms molecular qubits from isolated spin systems into versatile sensing platforms that function across biological and materials environments.

The MSE program is an inclusive, collaborative experience for middle school music students, high school musicians considering a career in music teaching and music education majors at the College of Music. The program provides both a supplemental musical experience to school-based music programs for 6th- through 8th-grade students in the Boulder Valley School District and other districts—across all socioeconomic backgrounds—and strengthens opportunities for future music educators. CU Boulder music students gain experience in providing instruction and administration for nearly all facets of the program.

The program includes full group rehearsals, sectional instruction by instrument and elements of comprehensive musicianship (e.g., music theory, improvisation and composition). All program activities are led by college students, supervised by faculty directors and graduate assistants with experience in music education. A select group of high school students are nominated by their music teachers to participate as co-teachers as they consider music teaching as a career option.

Bio: Dr. Kevin Reardon is a scientist at the National Solar Observatory and a Research Professor in the Department of Astrophysical and Planetary Sciences. He has studied many different aspects of the solar activity, from the photosphere to the corona. He uses numerous telescopes from the ground and on satellites, from the x-ray to the millimeter wavelengths, as well as collecting data at multiple solar eclipses. He has always wanted to fly through the middle of a sunspot.

The myth of Prometheus serves as a cautionary tale about humanity's destructive use of a powerful element, particularly in the context of climate change. The concept of "Prometheus fire" highlights the duality of fire as both a gift that enables human progress and a destructive force that now imperils the planet through human-caused actions. As humans evolved from controlling fire for survival to harnessing it for industrial purposes, most of humanity inadvertently set the stage for a global climate crisis. This echoes the fate of Prometheus, a nearly 5,000-year-old Great Basin bristlecone pine felled in 1964 by a graduate student studying past climate events. While the tree's felling was for research and not a direct act of climate destruction, its ancient life and the student's purpose implicitly connect it to the ongoing scientific efforts to understand and address the climate crisis that the broader Promethean myth foreshadows, making both figures symbolic of humanity's impact on the planet.

Special guests, filmmakers Matthew Wolkow & Jean-Jacques Martinod in person!

In 2021, the cicada Brood X, which hatches every 17 years in the eastern United States, was about to return. Matthew Wolkow was preparing for his first feature film to cover this event. But the COVID-19 pandemic and the travel restrictions that accompanied the lockdowns have derailed this project. Eastern Anthems, in gestation for five years, had to adapt to the last minute. Living in Montreal, Wolkow contacted Jean-Jacques Martinod, across the border, to help him. Threatened with eviction after a rent increase in Santa Fe, Martinod also had to adapt to an unexpected change. Then begins a correspondence between the two men who wish to capture the appearance of Brood X while the United States emerges from the gloomy first principal of Donald Trump and the Black Lives Matter movement still remains vivid in the minds. Wolkow and Martinod offer us a sensitive film that, through a formal work that gives pride of place to the trial and fragility of art, gives us to see a world in the grip of trouble where cicadas seem to predict the end of an era while another is still slow to arrive.

The myth of Prometheus serves as a cautionary tale about humanity's destructive use of a powerful element, particularly in the context of climate change. The concept of "Prometheus fire" highlights the duality of fire as both a gift that enables human progress and a destructive force that now imperils the planet through human-caused actions. As humans evolved from controlling fire for survival to harnessing it for industrial purposes, most of humanity inadvertently set the stage for a global climate crisis. This echoes the fate of Prometheus, a nearly 5,000-year-old Great Basin bristlecone pine felled in 1964 by a graduate student studying past climate events. While the tree's felling was for research and not a direct act of climate destruction, its ancient life and the student's purpose implicitly connect it to the ongoing scientific efforts to understand and address the climate crisis that the broader Promethean myth foreshadows, making both figures symbolic of humanity's impact on the planet.

Environmental racism affects neighborhood-level air quality in U.S. cities. We have historically lacked spatially comprehensive observations that resolve neighborhood-scale air pollution variability. Satellites offer opportunities to describe and inform decision-making related to air pollution inequalities. Satellite measurements also provide temporal information useful for identifying their emission sources and situating inequalities in urban air quality contexts, for example, surface ozone air pollution. In this talk, I will share our work advancing the application of satellite remote sensing for measuring neighborhood-scale air pollution inequalities and improving our understanding of their sources and chemistry—analyses that also challenge satellite observations analytically and push the bounds of their use in atmospheric chemistry research. Examples will include intraurban variability in trace-gas enhancement ratios of combustion pollutants (∆NO2/∆CO), relationships between ozone chemistry and spatial patterns in precursor emissions, air pollution inequalities associated with industrialized agriculture, and a preview of our new satellite/model product, the Enhanced OMI NO2 (EON) Network, a daily 0.02° x 0.02° NO2 product over 2005–2025 for major cities globally. I will discuss our results in ways that are relevant to decision-making, with satellite measurements having the potential to transform the demands people can place on their policymakers.

Topic: Mechanisms and Performance of UV Treatment for Biofilm Control in Drinking Water Infrastructure

Bio: EVEN PhD Candidate, Linden group

Abstract: Opportunistic pathogens (OPs), such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa, can survive in biofilms and proliferate in drinking water systems even in the presence of a disinfectant residual, making them the leading cause of waterborne disease outbreaks in higher income countries. New technologies, such as light-emitting diodes (LEDs) that emit germicidal ultraviolet (UV) light, present new opportunities to apply UV within drinking water infrastructure for disinfection. This seminar explores how these UV technologies can be applied to reduce biofilm formation within drinking water systems, therefore reducing the burden of OPs. Using P. aeruginosa as a model organism, bench-scale experiments were conducted to assess two different UV LED application strategies: pre-treatment vs. in-situ treatment. Biofilm reduction under varying conditions (pipe materials, nutrient conditions, UV wavelengths), as well as how UV treatment affects the structural development of biofilms, was investigated. Lastly, meetings with collaborators across academia, industry, utilities, and research sectors were conducted to evaluate if and how these technologies could be applied in the future.

Hypothesis driven control of phase in colloidal synthesis

Long chain ligands have long been used to control size and shape of nanocrystals by binding to growing surfaces, but we have discovered rich molecular chemistries with the precursors that completely change the fate of the reaction. To discover the fundamental rules behind phase control, it is important therefore to identify reactions that can isolate the effects of reaction kinetics from changing mechanistic routes. Substituted thioureas were reacted with iron, cobalt and nickel and copper salts. By mapping out the effects of precursor reactivity and temperature on the phase of the sulfides, hypotheses can be developed about the predictable paths that occur between phases based on their anion stacking and hole filling patterns. We discovered that the synthetic behavior of the iron, cobalt and nickel sulfides can mostly be predicted by the anion stacking of hcp or ccp. Based on these maps, we developed hypothesis driven syntheses to pyrrhotite (Fe1-xS), mackinawite (Fe1+xS), smythite (Fe3+xS4), greigite (Fe3S4), marcasite (FeS2), pyrite (FeS2), jaipurite (CoS), cobalt pentlandite (Co8S9), linnaeite (Co3S4), cattierite (CoS2), a- NiS, millerite (NiS), godlevskite (Ni9S8), heazlewoodite (Ni3S2), polydymite (Ni3S4), vaesite (NiS2).

Rediscovering the Methods of Anishinaabe Rock Art

In the lakes of Manitoba, Quebec, Ontario, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan hundreds of hematite (a-Fe2O3) rock paintings of the Anishinaabeg can be found, almost exclusively on high

holy places of rock cliffs overlooking lakes and rivers. The methods for preparing paintings were held by few medicine men, and with the Iroquoian wars of the 17th century and the cultural genocide of the 19th and 20th centuries of residential schools, forced relocations, and population decline, the methodology was lost. Our goal is to rediscover the medicine of the rock paintings so that the Anishinaabeg may create new paintings.

We hypothesize that the resilience of the paintings must result from covalent bonding. possible source is sol-gel condensations between silica and the hematite, catalyzed at high pH. Dissolved silica in the lye appears to be an important component to creating a resilient paint formulation. In consultation with an Archaeologist and an Ethnogeographer with strong ties to the Annishabeg, we are collecting, ashing and creating lye from culturally relevant plants. Using ICP-OES, we are and determining the resultant pH and dissolved silica content to determine what plants could be likely components of a durable hematite paint formulation.

Bio: Janet Macdonald is an Associate Professor of Chemistry at Vanderbilt University, where she has been since 2011. Before that time, she did her graduate work at the University of Alberta under the supervision of Jon Veinot and a post-doctoral fellowship with Uri Banin at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Her group primarily focuses on how crystalline phase is determined in colloidal nanocrystal synthesis. Her group regularly collaborates with physicists and physical chemists to examines fundamental charge transfer processes from quantum dots, and plasmon-plasmon coupled harmonic light generation using combinations of metal and plasmonic semiconducting nanoparticles. Dr. Macdonald is also an Associate Editor for Nanoscale and Nanoscale Advances.

Barbara Steinmetz (née Bandler) was born in 1936 as the second of two children to an orthodox Jewish family in Gyor, Hungary. Shortly after her birth, the family returned to the northern Adriatic town of Lussinpiccolo, (fascist) Italy, where Alexander Samuel and Margaret Charlotte Bandler, Barbara’s parents, had been running a popular hotel since the late 1920s. The family stayed in Italy until 1939, when the implementation of the Italian Racial Laws, including the loss of employment and right to property ownership, forced them to leave the country. They first went to Southern France and, in 1940, managed to reach Lisbon. They secured visas for the Dominican Republic, one of the very few countries to announce immigration opportunities at the 1939 Evian conference. Margaret Bandler’s chemistry degree, specializing in milk products, met Dominican officials’ interest in immigrants with agricultural expertise. The family left Europe by boat in May 1941, first sailing to New York and then onwards to the Dominican Republic. They settled in Sosúa, where the Dominican Republic Resettlement Association (DORSA) had established a new settlement. Barbara stayed in the Dominican Republic with her older sister and parents until June 1945. With the help of relatives in the US, they managed to get visas that enabled them to return and, this time, disembark in New York. Her parents got jobs and moved the family to Detroit, where Barbara and her sister started or continued school.

A long-term resident of Colorado, she was in a group of Jewish Coloradans, who highlighted the fate of the post-October 2023 hostages in Gaza, in a public event on Boulder's Pearl Street Mall last summer, when a man attacked them with firebombs. Many in the group, like Barbara, were severely burnt. One of them later passed away from the injuries she had sustained.

REEFER MADNESS is one of the first unintentional cinematic gutbusters, a proto-noir melodrama so preposterous it’s like a transmission from Mars. Originally an Afterschool Special for the tent revival set, a modern REEFER viewing is a hilarious romp through the American establishment’s bottomless paranoia -- proving how far we’ve come, and how far we’ve yet to go.

For eighty years since its creation, this seminal cult classic has captured the imaginations of stoners, curiosity seekers and movie maniacs. Come join the party -- vive le reefer!

In the '30s and '40s, the debate over sex and violence in entertainment was at least as muddled and confused as it is now, and after the institution of the strict Hays Code, the amount of flesh, blood, and morally questionable behavior permissible in Hollywood films became extremely limited. Where, then, could audiences hungry for unsavory action turn? To fill the void, up stepped a group of maverick, independent filmmakers who could, by ostensibly creating cautionary tales in the interest of public service, get away with just about anything they wanted. Touring the country playing small-town movie houses, exploitation filmmakers and exhibitors (who were often one and the same) spread the good word about the perils of sexually transmitted diseases, drugs, teenage prostitution, and other plagues while turning a sizable profit in the process. Consequently, audiences could have it all, feeling enlightened and morally outraged while watching all the sex, violence, and corruption they wanted.

Reefer Madness is plagued by boring patches, but all in all, the Espers' 1936 film deserves its reputation as one of the most entertainingly bad movies ever made. Opening with an explanation of the effects of the demon drug "marihuana," Reefer Madness then explains that its subject is worse than heroin, cocaine, or any other recreational substance before launching into its story of the corruption of innocent, if suspiciously old-looking, high-schoolers.

According to the film, several puffs on a marijuana cigarette—distributed by suit-and-tie-clad men working out of barren offices—teenagers feel the uncontrollable urge to bug out their eyes, laugh maniacally, dance wildly, cheat on their girlfriends, listen to hot jazz, drive at breakneck speeds, and possibly commit murder. For all their plentiful camp value, however, Reefer Madness is fascinating and revealing for other reasons: Not only does it shed light on the various paranoias that troubled the '30s, but it also provides timeless examples of the fact that wherever controversy flares up, people will always be there to profit from it. Whenever material is repressed, it inevitably returns, though usually in less brazenly entertaining forms than you'll find here.

You’ve optimized everything. Color-coded calendar, dialed-in morning routine, tracked macros. Hit the goals. But you still can’t sleep. Excessive daytime sleepiness is a common consequence of poor sleep among high achievers. The same qualities that make you effective – discipline, persistence, pushing through discomfort – are sabotaging your rest. And the harder you try to fix it, the worse it gets.

At once coldly calibrated and uncomfortably visceral, this complex arthouse drama centres on Nina (Ia Sukhitashvili), an OB-GYN who performs off-the-book abortions in an isolated, impoverished rural region in the country of Georgia.

Filmmaker Dea Kulumbegashvili (Beginning) deals with the gritty, workaday details of social realism, but she keeps her stripped-down narrative thrumming with the dread of abstract horror. April (in Georgian, with English subtitles) begins with an absolutely enigmatic image — a faceless, naked, heavily breathing form shuffling through an indeterminate black space. Even when we have switched over to the sterile fluorescent light of a modern hospital, this surreal spectre haunts Nina's story.

Nina has brought thousands of babies into the world and is the hospital's go-to specialist for complicated births. When a high-risk delivery ends in a stillborn infant, the ensuing investigation threatens to expose Nina's hidden and illegal after-hours work — helping desperate women faced with unwanted pregnancies. (In Georgia, abortion is, in theory, legal under certain circumstances. In practice, it is highly restricted and often stigmatized. The film was essentially shot in secret, the filmmaker's approach paralleling Nina's.)

Kulumbegashvili tracks Nina's days and nights as she walks an impossible line in a community that both needs her and scorns her. As her concerned colleague and former lover David (Kakha Kintsurashvili) suggests, "These rumours about abortion: if they're true, you're throwing your life away. No one will thank you. No one will defend you."

Nina is at the centre of every scene in this film but remains enigmatic. In her professional life, she is a deeply compassionate doctor, driving miles on almost impassably muddy lanes to sit with patients. In her personal life, she remains socially cut off and emotionally unreachable. She often takes nocturnal drives down a dark highway, picking up men for (sometimes risky) anonymous sex. When David asks her why she has never married and had children, she replies that she has "no space in my life for anything else."

There's something intense and angular and uncompromising in the character of Nina and in Sukhitashvili's performance. Kulumbegashvili's distinctive, difficult cinematic style reflects this. She uses long, unbroken takes, shot with a fixed camera, with characters often talking out of the frame, heard but not seen. The audio combines discordant music and the unsettling sounds of machinery, barking dogs and wailing sirens. The other crucial element of the soundscape is silence — long, unnerving stretches of silence. Stylistically and thematically, there are parallels to films such as The Girl with the Needle and Under the Skin.

Kulumbegashvili breaks ground, though, in her use of medical sequences, rigorously demystifying reproductive health care with graphic, protracted scenes of childbirth — including a vaginal delivery and a caesarean — in which the filmmaker is recording actual events with actual women, not simulations. Another medical procedure plays out in real time, almost as if Kulumbegashvili is saying to the audience, if these characters can endure this, so can you.

In her examination of the ways profoundly personal experiences collide with institutional power, Kulumbegashvili makes things deliberately hard. This may be an issue film, but it's not remotely didactic. There's not much explication or resolution here. The final meaning of that figure seen in the opening sequence remains murky, for instance, as do the reasons for Nina's compulsive commitment to her work. But if April requires patience and concentration and labour from its viewers, by its shattering conclusion, it also rewards them.

The myth of Prometheus serves as a cautionary tale about humanity's destructive use of a powerful element, particularly in the context of climate change. The concept of "Prometheus fire" highlights the duality of fire as both a gift that enables human progress and a destructive force that now imperils the planet through human-caused actions. As humans evolved from controlling fire for survival to harnessing it for industrial purposes, most of humanity inadvertently set the stage for a global climate crisis. This echoes the fate of Prometheus, a nearly 5,000-year-old Great Basin bristlecone pine felled in 1964 by a graduate student studying past climate events. While the tree's felling was for research and not a direct act of climate destruction, its ancient life and the student's purpose implicitly connect it to the ongoing scientific efforts to understand and address the climate crisis that the broader Promethean myth foreshadows, making both figures symbolic of humanity's impact on the planet.

About the exhibition: Campus Life explores the shared history of humans and more-than-human inhabitants over the 150 years of CU Boulder, documenting their evolving relationship. The works exhibited illustrate how different forms of life coexist on campus through a diverse collection of visual media including historical maps, photographs, original watercolors and modern cartography that tracks current and past human-wildlife interactions. On view April 22 until December 2026.

As part of the exhibition, the curators are collecting oral stories from peoples' experiences with the more-than-human on and around campus. Contribute your personal experience to the project.

Campus Life is a collaboration with NEST Studio for the Arts, the Museum of Natural History and Facilities Management.

Abstract: Condensed matter physics aims to explore and understand various quantum phenomena that emerge from the interactions between nuclei and electrons. Through synthesizing and investigating various crystals, this constructionism approach has led to the discovery of many amazing phenomena, especially when the principles of electron correlation and topology play important roles. The settings of such conventional crystals are often very complicated, making it hard to extract the essential ingredients and understand the underlying physics. In this talk, I will show our efforts on establishing a new paradigm, based on a material known as rhombohedral graphene, which is part of natural graphite. Rhombohedral graphene has the simplest chemistry and structure, yet can be controlled by a set of experimental knobs to exhibit many intriguing phenomena in condensed matter physics. Beyond phenomena that were familiar, I will focus on two newly observed quantum phases of matter, chiral superconductor[1] and fractional quantum anomalous Hall effect[2]. I will show their construction, phenomena, and implications for quantum many-body physics and applications. In the end, I will discuss new opportunities to be explored in this new paradigm.

For CU students, staff and faculty, come learn about the way of Zen. Get to know your true self. We will sit for 20 minutes, then have a brief discussion about Zen practice and how we can improve our sense of wellbeing and balance by meditating.

Each Wednesday this semester, meditation will be led by Dr. Sigman Myoshin Byrd, professor in the Program for Writing and Rhetoric, a 16-year zazen practitioner, member of the Eon Zen Center in Boulder and student of Sensei Paul Gyodo Agostinelli.

Charlie Chaplin's The Great Dictator moves the iconic actor into the sound era while effectively satirizing German dictator Adolf Hitler.

[…] had Chaplin known what was actually happening, he might not have made this film. He said as much in his autobiography: "Had I known of the actual horrors of the German concentration camps, I could not have made The Great Dictator, I could not have made fun of the homicidal insanity of the Nazis."

The film starts out during World War I in 1918 with a Jewish Private (Charlie Chaplin) fighting for Tomainia. The private saves the life of Commander Schultz (Reginald Gardiner) but when their flight crashes, it changes the war's direction. Before they know it, Tomainia surrenders. What nobody could probably realize at the time is that one plane crash would have drastic ramifications. When we meet up with them some twenty years later, the private has amnesia and now works as a barber. Meanwhile, Commander Schultz now runs the ghetto for dictator Adenoid Hynkel (Chaplin).

While the barber has no recollection of his memory, Schultz saves his life this time around. It doesn't matter that the private and neighbor Hannah (Paulette Goddard) are resisting the military forces. Not too long after this is where the film can turn rather dark but still display some biting satire. Hynkel turns to banker Hermann Epstein for money but the Jewish banker turns him down. What happens next? Hynkel decides to take things out on the Jews. Getting through these scenes will certainly depend on one's sense of humor.

In a strange turn of events, Schultz sees what is happening and changes sides. Enough is enough! He rises up against the dictator and joins forces with the barber. This is where having a doppelganger can be to one's advantage or disadvantage. The barber finds himself with the opportunity to save lives. Here's a guy that's never delivered a speech in his life and it becomes one of the most important moments in The Great Dictator. Yes, there's a sense of irony in Charlie Chaplin playing a character delivering an impassioned speech but here we are.

Whether or not the Jewish barber is a variation on Chaplin's Tramp is really left up to the viewers. If you believe Chaplin, the barber isn't even in the same universe. Again, it's on us to make a decision.

The Great Dictator may have been a bold piece of satirical storytelling at the time but the film has aged like fine wine.

Abstract: What is manipulation? How does the human brain use its hands and other resources to cook, build, gather, reap, sow, etc.? We humans would seem to have the most intimate possible view of the process, but that is an illusion. Most of the process is handled subconsciously, as if an "inner robot" were in charge, and we were just along for the ride. There is a saying: The greatest enemy of knowledge is not ignorance, it is the illusion of knowledge. We think we know how manipulation is done, so why bother with a careful look? The goal of this talk is to achieve a better view of manipulation in all its glory, and then examine the progress of robotic manipulation. The end of the talk includes some reflections on the future of robotics.

Bio: Matt Mason has spent 50 years conducting research in Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, starting as a student in the MIT AI Lab where he earned the BS, MS, and PhD degrees. He spent much of his career at Carnegie Mellon University's Robotics Institute, where he was the founder and co-director of the Manipulation Laboratory, and for ten years served as the Director of the Robotics Institute. Matt's group studied the basic physics governing grasping and manipulation, and its application to autonomous manipulation systems. Mason is a Fellow of the AAAI, AAAS, ACM, and IEEE, and a winner of the IEEE R&A Society's Pioneer Award and the IEEE Technical Field Award in Robotics and Automation (aka the R&A Prize).

You’ve optimized everything. Color-coded calendar, dialed-in morning routine, tracked macros. Hit the goals. But you still can’t sleep. Excessive daytime sleepiness is a common consequence of poor sleep among high achievers. The same qualities that make you effective – discipline, persistence, pushing through discomfort – are sabotaging your rest. And the harder you try to fix it, the worse it gets.

Director Jim Henson's "Labyrinth" is one of the many epic fantasy films of the eighties indirectly influenced by George Lucas' "Star Wars," and while it never aspires to be anything more than a standalone tale, that doesn't mean it doesn't possess epic potential from beginning to end. Director Henson unfolds a very unique and entertaining tale of a young girl who learns how to grow as a person through a menacing adventure through a massive labyrinth. Much in the realm of "Alice in Wonderland," or "Wizard of Oz," young Sarah finds herself confronting many monsters and menaces, and becomes a hero in the end.

Much in the realm of "Coraline" and "Mirrormask," Henson's fantasy adventure is less about the world that we see and more about our heroine's personal growth. When we meet Sarah, she's a fantasy obsessed teen who complains and whines about everything in her life. Forced to babysit her toddler brother for the night, she makes one wish too many and wishes him away by goblins. Little does she know the Goblin king has been watching her, and heeds her wish, stealing her toddler brother. Now anxious to find him, she has thirteen hours to work her way through the Goblin King's labyrinth and find her brother before he becomes the king's minions. "Labyrinth" garners an immense and incredible world built around Jim Henson's masterful puppetry, and Frank Oz's excellent voice work.

Sarah is a character that begins very unlikable and grating and eventually finds redemption throughout the course of her journey. She not only begins to realize that one should be careful what they wish for, but that she really doesn't have it all that bad, compared to other people in the world. At one point The Goblin King pushes time forward to which Sarah declares "That's not Fair" The Goblin King responds with "You say that so often, I wonder what your basis for comparison is?" Much of the labyrinth and its characters are reflections of Sarah's life and her personality, as she's tasked with taming wild beasts that are symbolic of her bratty toddler brother, and she learns through others the value of appreciation, gratitude and that life can't go exactly the way you plan it, all the time. It's a realistic and down to Earth goal for a character that needs a lesson in humility.

The world Henson and his crew create is vivid and incredible, with a reality that never quite makes sense, and environments that act as paradoxes and misdirection. You can never be sure what is around the corner, and often times you can never trust your eyes to tell you that there is a corner in this maze. The puppetry is still as striking and beautiful as ever, and the creatures are ugly, but charming in their own elements. David Bowie is a scene stealer as the glamorous Goblin King who is devious and deceptive, and manages to throw in a few great songs that he sings with his goblin army. "Labyrinth" thankfully lives up to its hype as a wonderful eighties fantasy gem. It's up there in quality with the likes of "The Neverending Story" and "Legend."

The concept of "Prometheus fire" highlights the duality of fire as both a gift that enables human progress and a destructive force that now imperils the planet through human-caused actions. As humans evolved from controlling fire for survival to harnessing it for industrial purposes, most of humanity inadvertently set the stage for a global climate crisis. The myth of Prometheus serves as a cautionary tale about humanity's destructive use of a powerful element, particularly in the context of climate change. The concept of "Prometheus fire" highlights the duality of fire as both a gift that enables human progress and a destructive force that now imperils the planet through human-caused actions. As humans evolved from controlling fire for survival to harnessing it for industrial purposes, most of humanity inadvertently set the stage for a global climate crisis. This echoes the fate of Prometheus, a nearly 5,000-year-old Great Basin bristlecone pine felled in 1964 by a graduate student studying past climate events. While the tree's felling was for research and not a direct act of climate destruction, its ancient life and the student's purpose implicitly connect it to the ongoing scientific efforts to understand and address the climate crisis that the broader Promethean myth foreshadows, making both figures symbolic of humanity's impact on the planet.

Ground-level ozone (O3) is one of six criteria air pollutants identified by U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which is associated with increased risk of cardiovascular and respiratory diseases. More than 100 million US people live in O3 non-attainment areas. In this talk, I will discuss how we use satellite remote sensing observations to understand the influence of anthropogenic and wildfire emissions on the formation of ground-level O3. O3 production is non-linearly dependent on the availability of its precursors: nitrogen oxides (NOx) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Using long-term observations from the sun synchronous satellite instruments, we examine the multidecadal trends in O3 chemistry, while the newly launched NASA’s geostationary TEMPO instrument is used to diagnose the diurnal variations of O3 chemistry. Next, I will discuss the impacts of wildfires on O3 and its precursors. Satellite observations reveal that wildfires cause widespread increase of O3 precursors, which favor the O3 production, but the smoke aerosols can inhibit O3 production both radiatively and chemically. By accounting for the aerosol effects, we redefine the O3 production regimes. We find widespread aerosol-inhibited conditions within wildfire plumes as well as in heavily polluted urban regions of Asia and Africa, where high aerosol loadings inhibit O3 formation. Overall, our findings highlight how space-based observations can complement in-situ measurements and model simulations by providing information on the spatial and temporal variations of O3 chemistry.

The concept of "Prometheus fire" highlights the duality of fire as both a gift that enables human progress and a destructive force that now imperils the planet through human-caused actions. As humans evolved from controlling fire for survival to harnessing it for industrial purposes, most of humanity inadvertently set the stage for a global climate crisis. This echoes the fate of Prometheus, a nearly 5,000-year-old Great Basin bristlecone pine felled in 1964 by a graduate student studying past climate events. While the tree's felling was for research and not a direct act of climate destruction, its ancient life and the student's purpose implicitly connect it to the ongoing scientific efforts to understand and address the climate crisis that the broader Promethean myth foreshadows, making both figures symbolic of humanity's impact on the planet.
