Over the last several years, there has been a surge of interest in grading, including concerns that some traditional grading practices may reduce learner motivation, increase anxiety, and inhibit learning. This session will introduce alternative approaches to grading, which broadly aim to decenter grades and refocus assessment on promoting learner success. We will focus on two particular alternative approaches to grading: specifications grading and ungrading. Participants will learn what these approaches aim to do, what they entail, and how to effectively implement them. Participants will also have the opportunity to workshop ways to incorporate alternative grading approaches into their own courses in a supportive, collaborative environment. This workshop is part of the CTL and ASSETT’s Spring 2025 Assessment Workshop Series. We encourage you to explore other assessment-related offerings via our CTL events page.
