Amy Johnson, b. 1976, Charlotte, NC, received a BS in Sociology from Presbyterian College in Clinton, SC, and a BFA from the University of CO, Boulder. Johnson holds an M.F.A. from the University of Washington ceramics program.

Johnson is an interdisciplinary artist and educator working across ceramics, photography, video, and performance. Her practice focuses on creating images and multi-media works by layering self-portrait, movement, and landscape. Johnson creates immersive environments that invite viewers into intimate, performative encounters.

Her project, Seasons Quartet, brought together four bodies of work created over the course of twelve years. The individual works were supported by grants and fellowships from the Alaska State Council on the Arts, the Rasmuson Foundation, and the Idaho Commission on the Arts. Seasons Quartet marks a significant expansion of Johnson’s practice and cross-disciplinary collaboration.

Johnson has participated in numerous artist residencies, including The Archie Bray Foundation for Ceramic Arts (2005), Centrum Artist Residency Program (2008), Vermont Studio Center (2009), Arteles Creative Center in Haukijärvi, Finland (2013), and The McColl Center for Art + Innovation (2017). In 2024, she was an artist-in-residence at Studio Faire in Nérac, France, where she produced her most recent video project, I’ll Rob Your Heart.

Johnson is currently a visiting artist faculty member in the University of Colorado Boulder ceramics department.
