The Boulder Apple Tree Project presents the second installment of the Boulder Apple Tree Symposium series. The focus of this installment is the History of Apples in Boulder. This project started in 2017 with the goal of understanding the natural and cultural histories of the apple cultivars in Boulder, CO and the surrounding area. Since then, we have mapped the location of local varietals and are classifying these apple cultivars using genetic tools. Our work has expanded to include museum exhibits, citizen science activities, and community events. In addition, we started an innovative course Fall Semester 2019 in which undergraduate students from the University of Colorado (CU) conduct research on the genetics, ecology, and physiology of Boulder apple trees. Our project launched a second undergraduate course (HIST 2326), focused on the environmental history of Boulder apple trees, in Spring 2020. Also, this course is unique in that the students have opportunities to engage with the community through their research, and through other activities and assignments. Many of the students in this class have never conducted research before, and the majority of the students are in their first two years at CU. The round-table discussions at this symposium represent the culmination of the students’ research contributions to the Boulder Apple Tree Project. We hope that these courses, as well as our research, help to establish Boulder apple trees as a valued resource for historical and genetic exploration, urban forestry, and ecosystem services. Registration is required.
