Seminar:  Bridging Fields Towards Sustainability: Plant Polyphenols as the Nexus of Bioengineering and Metal-Organic Materials

Speaker:  Junling Guo, professor, Fellow of Royal Society of Chemistry, Sichuan University; visiting professor, University of British Columbia

Host:  Wyatt Shields

Seminar Abstract
Plant polyphenols, the fourth largest biomass resource after cellulose, hemicelluloses, and lignin, offer diverse molecular structures and chemical properties ideal for biomass conversion. Our work has harnessed plant polyphenols as emerging building blocks for metal-organic materials (Sci Adv 2021; Angew Chem 2014, 2019, 2023). This innovative approach has driven advancements in different therapies for complex diseases (Adv Funct Mater 2019, 2020; Adv Sci 2019; Biomaterials 2020, 2021), environmental technologies (Energy Environ Sci 2019; Environ Sci Technol 2023), and water treatment solutions (Matter 2022; Adv Mater 2023). Additionally, we have explored the polyphenols in nano-bio interfacial assembly, enabling supraparticle nanoengineering (Nat Nanotechnol 2016) and creating new possibilities for cellular engineering (Science 2018; Nat Commun 2022; Adv Mater 2020, Adv Sci 2023). Through innovative uses of plant biomass, our research is not only shaping the field but also contributing significantly to sustainability and progressing towards carbon neutrality.
