Topic: Modeling the compositions of fluids derived from magmas
Academic host: Aaron Bell
Abstract: It has long been a goal to quantitatively model elemental partitioning and mass transfer between magmas and aqueous fluids. This talk will describe an effort to accomplish this goal by merging two existing thermodynamic modeling tools, MELTS for magmatic systems, and DEW for high temperature aqueous fluids, into a framework to accomplish this task. A sketch of how this merger is done and examples of how results from this combined model may be used to better understand the evolution of fluids in geothermal systems at both Yellowstone and in New Zealand will be presented.
