DESCRIPTION:Presented by: Professor Markus Raschke\n\nAbstract: The rare ea
rth elements\, hidden at the bottom of the periodic table and long neglect
ed\, have risen to prominence at the end of the 20th century. Their unique
electronic configuration form the basis for a variety of lasers\, photoni
c applications\, strong and exotic magnetism\, defining many modern techno
logies. I will tell a story connecting from the basic science of the geolo
gy of Colorado and rare earth and other rare element mineralogy\, to our t
echnological and societal dependence and questions of strategic element se
curity. \n\nThe Department of Physics proudly presents the Saturday Physic
s Series\, lectures geared toward high school students and adults to highl
ight the exciting research and practical potential of physics. \n\nAll lec
tures are free and open to the public.
