Prof. Svetlana Adonyeva from St. Petersburg, Russia will discuss gender as a social identity that involves relationships of difference and control. How do people respond to the social control presented by gendered roles? The focus here is on women in Russian villages who practice “un-feminine things,” who intentionally choose masculine-marked activities and dress. In Russian villages these women are called “half-men.” Her work is based on interviews, and she will include video clips.
