Desire Lines is a a new exhibition in the Earth Sciences & Map Library exploring the fascinating world of fireflies through a unique blend of art, science, and geographical context.

The exhibition presents scientific data alongside artistic interpretations that aims to foster a deeper public appreciation for the delicate nocturnal ecosystems that fireflies inhabit; illustrating the intertwined relationship between living light, human creativity, and the environment.

A “desire line” is an informal and unofficial path created by human foot traffic or nonhuman animal routes. In human terms, this path often indicates a route that is more convenient than planned urban ones. Fireflies trace ephemeral luminous paths as they communicate with each other, which can be seen as their own form of "desire lines" in the environment.

The exhibit is sponsored by the University Libraries, NEST, and the Peleg Lab.
