Life at the bottom of the world: a research journey to the Antarctic Dry Valleys
Diane McKnight is a distinguished researcher and professor who studies the interactions between hydrologic, chemical and biologic processes in aquatic ecosystems. She is a founding principal investigator of the McMurdo Dry Valleys Long-Term Ecological Research Program in Antarctica.
In this talk, McKnight will reflect on her experiences over 27 field seasons in Antarctica, where she studied the lakes and streams that form oases for life in the cold desert landscape of the McMurdo Dry Valleys. She and her field team adapted to summer flooding and other adverse conditions in pursuit of a deeper understanding of the fascinating microbiota that thrive there. They also welcomed high-profile guests, including Al Gore, John McCain, and a teenage seal that showed up at base camp one summer.
After four decades involved in the program, McKnight has a deep appreciation of how ambition, foresight and teamwork can come together to create an invaluable scientific resource that spans generations.
