McKnight is a distinguished researcher and professor who studies the inter
actions between hydrologic\, chemical and biologic processes in aquatic eco
systems. She is a founding principal investigator of the McMurdo Dry Valley
 s Long-Term Ecological Research Program in Antarctica.\n\n\nIn this talk\,
McKnight will reflect on her experiences over 27 field seasons in Antarctic
a\, where she studied the lakes and streams that form oases for life in the
cold desert landscape of the McMurdo Dry Valleys. She and her field team a
dapted to summer flooding and other adverse conditions in pursuit of a deep
er understanding of the fascinating microbiota that thrive there. They also
  welcomed high-profile guests\, including Al Gore\, John McCain\, and a tee
nage seal that showed up at base camp one summer. \n\n\nAfter four decades
involved in the program\, McKnight has a deep appreciation of how ambition\
, foresight and teamwork can come together to create an invaluable scientif
ic resource that spans generations.\n \n\nINSTAAR grad student poster showc
