Dogs were likely the first species to be domesticated and have aided humans as companions, hunting aids, and more for thousands of years. This close connection allows us to use the study of dogs and their history to learn more about humans as well. In this talk I will discuss the history of domesticated dogs, from what we know about the early days of domestication to the present. I will also discuss my work examining ancient dog populations in the Americas – humans brought dogs with them when they first arrived in the Americas, and dogs were an important part of the lives and cultures of many Indigenous peoples. These ancient dogs have provided insights about the history of ancient human populations and illustrate the value of Man’s Best Friend during the past and in the present.
