Join us at the Center for Research Data and Digital Scholarship for our brown bag series. Join us on 11/7 at 12noon with Diego García, Burridge Endowed Chair in Finance in Leeds School of Business, in a talk called "Scraping Moody's: Digitizing Historical Financial and Accounting Information from Digital Images."

  • The talk will discuss how a team at the Leeds School is digitizing a set of historical manuals (the Moody's Manuals of Investment, 1909-1952). The challenges of image collection/curing, as well as those associated with different types of optical character recognition (OCR) algorithms, will be the focus of the discussion. Besides the technicalities behind OCR techniques and image manipulations, we hope to also touch on the breadth of data in the Moody's manuals, highlighting potential interdisciplinary ideas..

Throughout the academic year, CU students and faculty will address how they practice digital and/or open scholarship and what benefits there are to doing so. Through these informal talks and ensuing discussion, we hope to increase the exposure of the different approaches to discovery and the novel research questions that can be addressed through the use of digital research methods and tools. All are welcome to join us! Light refreshments will be served.
