Student Educational Scholarship Series

Following this semester’s Book Club, please continue to join us remotely on Wednesdays, 10:00-11:00 am MT (Oct. 30-Nov. 20) to discuss some graduate student education-based scholarship. We will spend a little time discussing a research article associated with the student’s work, followed by a discussion of their dissertation/thesis research.

Please REGISTER HERE and the CTL will follow up with a Zoom link for these sessions.

This session will be led by Jillian Kneeland (she/her), PhD Candidate, Literacy Studies; Field Coach, Secondary Humanities, Composition Hub Coordinator, Continuing Education; School of Education.

Paired reading: Stein, S. (2015). Mapping Global Citizenship. Journal of College and Character, 16(4), 242–252.

With roots in the UN's sustainable development goals, educational institutions far and wide can be said to hold commitments to Global Citizenship Education (GCE). However, what does GCE really mean and how is it carried in instructional spaces? For my dissertation, I teamed up with a high school teacher at an international school and participated in a collaborative practitioner inquiry to explore how a decolonial pedagogical approach might help students make sense of what global citizenship means to them.  In this discussion, I will share some preliminary findings of this research through some helpful practices and approaches to decolonizing GCE. We will also reflect on how Stein (2015) maps GCE practices in higher education to make connections to our own institutional space and consider how and why we might (or might not) make GCE a more intentional practice in our classrooms.
