Кино Клуб: Eastern European Film Series at CU Boulder - Fall 2022

Schedule:

Thursday, 09/15 6:30 pm. Armando Ianucci, The Death of Stalin (2017). HALE 230
Although not an Eastern European film per se, this (very well-informed) comedy about Stalin's last days and the struggle for power that ensued shortly after it, certainly touched the nerve of the Russian Ministry of Culture when it decided to ban it on grounds of "extremism." The screenings will be preceded by a presentation by Prof. Anastasiya Osipova designed to help the audience better appreciate historical references behind the jokes.

Thursday, 09/29 6:30 pm. Yuri Ilyenko, The White Bird Marked Black (1971). HALE 230
A mesmerizingly beautiful Ukrainian cult film about the fortunes of a family, living in the Carpathian mountains near the Romanian border during the Second World War.

Thursday, 10/06 6:30 pm. Vera KrichevskayaF@ck This Job (2021). HALE 230
A special documentary screening organized and presented by Prof. Natalia Plagmann.

Newlyweds Natasha and Sasha are living a fairy tale until they decide to start Dozhd, the only independent TV station in Russia. Armed with charm, naivité, determination, and a team of doe-eyed journalists, Natasha embarks on a ten-year journey of growth and resistance that will make them all a government target. Dozhd’s coverage of the war in Ukraine, Navalny’s anti-corruption investigations, and the unveiling of Putin’s state propaganda profoundly change Natasha and her team.

Thursday, 10/13 6:30 pm. Andrei Loshak, Broken Ties (2022). HALE 230
A critically acclaimed recent documentary about families divided by Russia's war in Ukraine and disinformation.

Thursday, 10/27 6:30 pm. Grigoriy Kozintsev, King Lear (1971). HUMN 135  *THIS EVENT IS CANCELLED*
One of the best Shakespeare adaptations in the history of world cinema, this film by the great Russian director Grigoriy Kozintsev channels the trauma of Stalinist Terror and World War Two through the language of Shakespeare's tragedy.

Thursday, 12/01 6:30 pm. Eldar Riazanov, Carnival in Moscow (1957). HALE 230
Released only four years after the death of Stalin, Riazanov's colorful and witty New Year's musical comedy became an instant hit among the Russian audience––both for its lively humor and for the transparent allegory for the celebration of resistance against tyranny.

All screenings will be in person.
