Title: Volunteered or voluntold? The motivations and perceived outcomes of graduate and postdoctoral mentors of undergraduate researchers
Abstract: Graduate students and postdoctoral researchers (postgraduates) in the life sciences frequently mentor undergraduate researchers, especially at research universities. Yet there has been only modest investigation of this relationship from the postgraduate perspective. This talk will present the results of an exploratory study of the experiences of postgraduate mentors in the life sciences, including their motivations, hesitations, experiences, and outcomes. The talk will end by presenting a hypothetical model of how postgraduates’ motivations influences their engagement in mentoring undergraduate researchers and with practical recommendations for engaging postgraduates in mentoring.
