Title: Recovering endangered amphibians in the presence of a recently-emerged disease

The Johnson Lab is hosting Roland Knapp this week, an aquatic ecologist whose research spans disease ecology, population ecology, and conservation biology. A major focus of his work is understanding amphibian declines in the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range. His work evaluates how a combination of ecosystem, community, and disease dynamics shape communities of some of the world's most threatened taxa.

Specifically, his research involves field surveys of  >13,000 water bodies, whole-lake experimentations designed to understand the effects of invasive species, as well as long-term population modeling to quantify the effects of chytrid fungus on amphibian populations. Dr. Knapp’s work answers important applied research questions about the recovery of threatened species and the management of infectious disease, as well as answers fundamental questions about the ecology of alpine aquatic ecosystems.
