ENVD 5:47 Lecture | Playing with Fire: An Inquiry Into the Ethical Boundaries of Design
Join us for an ENVD 5:47 Lecture with Allan Chochinov, founding chair of the MFA in Products of Design graduate program at the School of Visual Arts in New York City, and partner of Core77, the design network serving a global community of designers and design enthusiasts since 1995.
Playing with Fire: An Inquiry Into the Ethical Boundaries of Design
The power of design to create meaningful change is on its way to matching the power of design to move markets. But what about the areas where design might fear to tread, or “has no business” inserting itself? Through a dozen examples—from designing platforms for revenge or providing wayfinding to urban violence, to using menstrual blood to fertilize houseplants or creating tattoos for political protest—this lecture will look at design at the margins, highlighting projects that are daring, maybe objectionable, perhaps even “illegitimate,” in order to find out what might be just inside, or just outside, the reasonable limits of design practice and education.
