Gladys Preciado, Art History; Jashodhara Sen, Theatre; Anthony Kelley, Philosophy; Bertha Bermudez Tapia, Sociology; GTP Leads
Instructors are often encouraged to utilize diversity in the classroom to achieve their learning goals and to create a more inclusive classroom. The discussion is often narrowly focused on how to take into account the social identities of students to achieve these ends. This workshop seeks to broaden the discussion and to empower instructors to utilize their social identities to enhance student learning. We will discuss topics such as: whether and how one must acknowledge one’s social identity in the classroom, how the instructor’s identity impacts classroom discussions, and how to deal with certain conflict situations that might arise.
