We will focus on three hands-on talks/tutorials that will showcase how some of the faculty from our college and across the campus are using generative AI in their classrooms.  Participants can join in person or over Zoom. The presentations will be interactive and try to provide some hands-on experiences. Please bring your laptops along.

Planning to attend in-person? Please RSVP to srirams@colorado.edu. We may look for a bigger room if there is a lot of interest.

1. Co-authoring with AI: Effective and Responsible Writing in the Engineering Professions
Speaker:
 Diane Sieber

This presentation shares guides and exercises that have emerged from 5 semesters of iterative development in the classroom. Students can learn to write more productively and at higher quality by co-authoring with generative AI, and faculty can address student writing challenges more effectively and with less overall time investment. We will experiment live and hands-on with selected exercises while addressing the ethical complications of generative AI use by both faculty and students.

Bio: Diane is an Associate Professor in the Herbst Program for Engineering, Ethics and Society.  Her research focuses on AI ethics, generative AI and higher education, and the history of learning technologies such as Renaissance emblem books and commonplace books.  Since 2022 she had incorporated generative AI into her courses, as student writing assistants, co-authors and academic tutors, and as virtual course TAs.

2. Building Custom GenAI: Practical Tools for Boosting Productivity and Engagement.
Speaker:
 Bobby Hodgkinson

This talk will delve into the use of custom generative AI applications, from basic tools like NotebookLM to advanced custom GPTs. It will showcase practical examples that boost productivity and course engagement, demonstrating how you can easily build and implement these tools today, even with little to no prior experience.

Bio: Bobby is an Associate Teaching Professor in the Smead Aerospace Engineering department, focusing on experiential learning activities. He has integrated generative AI into his courses such as a custom AI tutor, grading assistants, and AI-enhanced coding assignments.

3. Reimagining Education with Custom GPTs
Speakers:
Jeremiah Contreras (Leeds) and Matthew Arnold (Leeds)

In this talk, Jeremiah and Mathew will explore how AI is transforming education. Using practical examples, they will showcase the development and use of custom GPTs to engage students in deeper learning both inside and outside the classroom. Attendees will discover how AI can create personalized learning experiences, enhance critical thinking, and foster collaboration, helping students engage with course materials in innovative ways.

Bios: Jeremiah Contreras has been a faculty member at the Leeds School of Business since 2017. With experience in auditing at KPMG, corporate controllership, and consulting, he brings practical insights into his teaching. Passionate about combining accounting with critical thinking, Jeremiah prepares students for ethical leadership in today’s dynamic business environment. As a leader in AI integration in business education, he helps develop curricula that blend traditional accounting principles with cutting-edge technology. Outside of work, he enjoys exploring the Colorado outdoors with his family.

Mathew Arnold, PhD, is a molecular neuroscientist with 15 years of laboratory research experience. His recent research involves describing the microbiomes long term influence on the expression of key serotonin system genes thought to play a key role in the production and maintenance of affective disorders. Mathew is currently an assistant teaching professor at Leeds School of Business in the Organizational Leadership and Information Analytics (OLIA) division. He has taught courses for 20 years in six different departments on the CU Boulder campus. His current interests involve developing novel approaches to teaching through the use of GenAI technology.
