This is the first session in a series of workshops titled Anti-Racist Community Engagement: Principles and Practices hosted by Campus Compact. Learn more about the series below.

Faculty members and doctoral students at George Mason University came together to create a space to encourage and facilitate discussions of anti-racism and decolonization in the context of our research practices in hopes of creating social change.

About the Series
Join the authors and editors of the recently published book, Anti-Racist Community Engagement: Principles and Practicesfor a series of virtual author talks and workshops that explore how students, community members, staff, and faculty put anti-racist principles into practice at college and university campuses and in communities.

In our fall virtual author speaker and workshop events, we will explore the first two Principles focused on confronting and dismantling traditional, higher education-centric approaches that center whiteness at the level of institution and on inter- and intrapersonal level through critical examinations of individual and systemic racism. The fall virtual gatherings will equip you with tools to reflect on your own biases and understand the historical context of systemic racism.

Moving into the new year, our spring virtual author speaker and workshop events shift our focus to the second two Principles focused on creating intentionally anti-racist learning experiences and facilitating and enacting pedagogies that support students’ sense of belonging as well as value their cultural assets and contributions. The spring virtual gatherings will help you design courses that align with anti-racist principles, meet challenging moments within a course, and imagine concrete mindful strategies to implement in your own teaching.
