Abstract: Remember to respond to that email ... remember to read that article ... remember to stop at the pharmacy ... remember, remember, remember! How do we cope with these myriad important demands while successfully navigating our more urgent goals? The factors governing what we will remember and what we will forget from each day have a profound importance for our success in everyday life. One key factor involves volitional processes in which we can choose how to direct our attention and use our limited working memory capacity for goal-directed action. Another key factor involves automatic processes in the brain that modify memories to resolve conflicts, such as prediction errors and competition between memories. Both of these processes have the potential to facilitate – or hinder – our ability to achieve goals. There is tremendous flexibility in how we can manipulate our thoughts, but the consequences of these operations are poorly understood. My research demonstrates that mental operations intended to facilitate short-term performance can have unintended long-term effects. My lab uses a combination of behavioral methods, brain imaging techniques, and computational approaches to address questions such as: (1) How do people prioritize their thoughts?, (2) How do people forget?, and (3) Can neurofeedback help people to remember (or forget)?. I address these questions in large part by using machine learning techniques to analyze brain imaging data. This state-of-the-art approach provides the ability to extract information about the mental state of individuals and track fluctuations of thought with remarkable specificity. Overall, I seek to understand how the brain remembers and forgets and to discover translations for education and therapy.
