About this Event
Doctoral candidate Brianna Dym will talk about digital platforms and their potential for good in marginalized communities. Digital platforms like social media are often showcased as the arrival of a new golden era. In recent years, optimism for these products has soured as social inequities spread across our online communities and are exacerbated by technical oversights. However, there are still ways that these platforms help people, and the insights from how they help can inform more ethical practices in designing and governing digital platforms. In this talk, I share lessons learned from observing a marginalized community building its own social media platforms and propose how we might encourage design and governance practices that empower people to leverage technology for good.
