Inspired by Holst’s The Planets and other works on the upcoming Boulder Phil “Infinite Space” concerts (Oct. 13 & 14), Dr. David Brain from LASP and the CU Department of Astrophysical and Planetary Sciences joins Music Director Michael Butterman at Fiske Planetarium for a special interdisciplinary event!

Mars Attacks. John Carter. Total Recall. War of the Worlds. Mars has long held a special place in popular culture as a possible place for alien life. We now know that life like that depicted in these stories doesn’t exist on Mars – but Mars is nevertheless highly relevant to our search for life and our place in the Universe. We will use the world-class Fiske Planetarium to view Mars in the night sky, fly to Mars and view spacecraft data, and gain a sense of where other habitable planets in our galaxy might be located.  Throughout the program, we’ll also hear music inspired in various ways by “Infinite Space” and humankind’s ongoing quest to understand the universe we call home.
