DESCRIPTION:Inspired by Holst’s The Planets and other works on the upcomi
ng Boulder Phil “Infinite Space” concerts (Oct. 13 & 14)\, Dr. David B
rain from LASP and the CU Department of Astrophysical and Planetary Scienc
es joins Music Director Michael Butterman at Fiske Planetarium for a speci
al interdisciplinary event!\n\nMars Attacks. John Carter. Total Recall. Wa
r of the Worlds. Mars has long held a special place in popular culture as
a possible place for alien life. We now know that life like that depicted
in these stories doesn’t exist on Mars – but Mars is nevertheless high
ly relevant to our search for life and our place in the Universe. We will
use the world-class Fiske Planetarium to view Mars in the night sky\, fly
to Mars and view spacecraft data\, and gain a sense of where other habitab
le planets in our galaxy might be located. Throughout the program\, we’
ll also hear music inspired in various ways by “Infinite Space” and hu
mankind’s ongoing quest to understand the universe we call home.
