Information Science Colloquium: Urban Legends and Rumors Concerning the 9/11 Terrorist Attacks

This talk describes urban legends and rumors connected to the 9/11 terrorist attacks. These rumors and urban legends are placed in a larger context of online scrutiny over the last quarter century. Empirical data is taken primarily from the archives of snopes and the discussion threads on the Usenet newsgroup alt.folklore.urban. The material presented represents part of one chapter from William Aspray and James Cortada, From Urban Legends to Political Fact-Checking (Springer, to be released in October 2019).

Biography: William Aspray is professor of Information Science and adjunct professor of Media Studies at CU Boulder.
