National Safety Council's Defensive Driving Course (DDC-4)

The NSC Defensive Driving Course is recognized for its leading edge curriculum, defensive driving strategies, hazard recognition exercises and learner retention strategies. This four-hour course, taught on location at the CU Boulder East Campus Transportation Services center, provides the primary knowledge and skills for defensive driving and describes techniques for avoiding high-risk driving behaviors. Participants will learn that the right attitude can prevent collisions and understand the consequences of poor-decision making.

This course will include behavior-modification strategies emphasizing:

  • Distracted, fatigued and impaired driving
  • Substance impairment
  • Sharing the road
  • Habits of defensive driving
  • Vehicle technology and safety features
  • Personal driving behaviors and risk-taking tendencies
  • Hazard identification and risk-assessment challenges
  • Scenario-based training
  • Application of knowledge and skills testing
  • Personal plan for making effective driving choices
