AIA Lecture: Brewing Beer in Roman Britain with Travis Rupp
The production and consumption of beer was a key feature of Roman-occupied Britain from the invasions of Julius Caesar through the end of Roman rule in the 5th century A.D. Archaeological and literary evidence supports the mass production of beer for Rome’s legions serving on Hadrian’s Wall, and the new styles and flavors were created as Antoninus Pius pushed further north through the Midlands into Scotland. This lecture will present how beer was produced, what the beer tasted like, and what (if any) traditions from the past are alive and well in British beer today. Seating is limited. Doors open at 6:15 PM. This event is co-sponsored by the Boulder chapter of the Archaeological Institute of America and the CU Museum of Natural History.
Travis Rupp is the Innovation and Wood Cellar Manager at Avery Brewing Company in Boulder, Colorado.
