Organic Chemistry Seminar with Professor Christian Melander of University of Notre Dame.

Seminar Title: Development of Small Molecules for the Eradication of Typhoid Fever

Abstract: Salmonella Typhi is the causative agent of Typhoid Fever. While 95-97% of patients are cured of infection through a standard antibiotic regiment, the remaining 3-5% of individuals become chronic carriers of the disease and serve as the reservoir for infection/re-infection of the bacteria in the community. Recent studies have demonstrated that the source of this chronic carriage are biofilms formed on gallstones. To address this unmet medical need, we have developed a suite of small molecules that elicit biofilm dispersion both in vitro and in vivo and demonstrate their utility in a murine model of chronic Salmonella infection.
