Orit Peleg, Associate Professor (BioFrontiers Institute, CU Boulder) & External Faculty (Santa Fe Institute)
Wednesday, June 18 at 7:00 pm
Location: Megaron, Mountain Research Station
----
Join scientist Orit Peleg for an in-depth look at firefly communication, conservation, and community science initiatives. Her research team uses advanced technology to study how fireflies talk to each other, uncovering the science behind their intricate signaling. And if you’ve heard that fireflies don’t exist in Colorado—think again! This lecture will highlight local firefly populations, ongoing community science projects, and lab-based efforts to study and protect these fascinating insects for future generations.
----
Bio: Peleg is an Associate Professor at the University of Colorado Boulder and an External Faculty at the Santa Fe Institute. Leading an interdisciplinary lab, she integrates computer science and physics while tending to honeybee hives and chasing fireflies in forests. Peleg holds a B.S. in physics and computer science and an M.S. in physics from Bar-Ilan University in Israel. She then moved to Switzerland to get her Ph.D. in materials science at ETH Zurich, and then to Boston for a Postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard University in first chemistry, and then applied mathematics.
