The Office of Postdoctoral Affairs (OPA) and Graduate School invite postdocs and graduate students to learn more about the world of “broader impacts” – that is, the potential for a research project to benefit society or advance desired societal outcomes – when it comes to competing for grant funding.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) and increasingly other funding sources require equal justification of intellectual merit and the “broader impacts” of proposed research. Having excellent broader impacts in your proposals is an effective way of insuring that your proposal rises to the top. Developing Broader Impacts statements can be daunting, but a little bit of knowledge and some preparation goes a long way towards making it easy and fulfilling. In this interactive workshop, Alex Rose with CU Boulder’s Science Discovery will cover what Broader Impacts can look like, how and why you should start developing your “Broader Impacts Identity” as a postdoc or graduate student, resources on the CU campus for engaging in outreach and public education and any specific questions you have.
