If the academic institution values equity and academic freedom, do our systems of scholarly discourse actually activate these values? This presentation will explore this question by examining how power is leveraged over academic lives through the industry of scholarly publishing, and will argue that the only way to ensure that our basic values are reflected in academic institutions is to reject business model agnosticism in scholarly publishing and recognize that features such as open access are the result of building systems that see academic freedom as a public, not private, value.
