Student Educational Scholarship Series
Following this semester’s Book Club, please continue to join us remotely on Wednesdays, 10:00-11:00 am MT (Oct. 30-Nov. 20) to discuss some graduate student education-based scholarship. We will spend a little time discussing a research article associated with the student’s work, followed by a discussion of their dissertation/thesis research.
Please REGISTER HERE and the CTL will follow up with a Zoom link for these sessions.
This session will be led by Alla Savelieva, M.A. Candidate and Russian Instructor, Department of Germanic and Slavic Languages and Literatures.
The session provides an overview of issues of representation in language materials and explores how social class is depicted in language learning materials and the implications for both learners and educators. Often, textbooks reinforce stereotypes by primarily featuring middle- or upper-class lifestyles, overlooking the diverse socioeconomic realities of many current U.S. college-level language learners. This presentation will critically examine how such limited portrayals can affect students' perceptions of language and culture and propose ways to incorporate a more inclusive range of class experiences. By addressing class representation, I aim to open an discussion about language textbooks bias.
