Deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) inhabit the widest elevational range of any North American mammal. High elevations pose cold and hypoxic (low oxygen) challenges to organisms living there. We capture deer mice from the summit of Mt. Blue Sky, a 14er here in Colorado, and from Kearney, Nebraska to study how thousands of years of evolution have shaped metabolic traits. At the root of metabolism is an organelle in all mammalian cells called mitochondria, colloquially known as the “powerhouse of the cell.” In my talk, I will share what we have learned about these high elevation mice and their extra powerful powerhouses!
