DESCRIPTION:Dr. Scott Wing\nDepartment of Paleobiology - Smithsonian NMNH\n
\nTopic: A new approach to using fossil plants for testing deep time clima
te models\n\nAbstract: Paleobotanical reconstructions of paleoclimate have
historically relied on fairly strong uniformitarian assumptions that exti
nct plants have similar climatic tolerances to their living relatives or a
nalogs. I will talk about a new approach to testing paleoclimate simulatio
ns by examining how consistent they are with geographic distributions of f
ossil plants rather than by converting the fossil plants to quantitative e
 stimates of paleoclimate.
