About this Event
Early research on the experiences of Black men in education centers deficit-based narratives. Research highlighted their perceived lack of interest and engagement in educationally purposeful activities. Over the years, scholars have combatted these deficit narratives with asset-based and anti-deficit approaches to researching and writing about the experiences of Black men in education. The purpose of this workshop is to provide a brief overview of critical theoretical frameworks related to fostering and sustaining achievement among Black men. Participants will also have opportunities to apply theory to practice through various individual and small group reflection activities.
Presenter: Jarvis Marlow-McCowin serves as the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Education Coordinator with Corning Incorporated's Office of Racial Equality and Social Unity (ORESU)
