The Center of the American West welcomes environmental historian Dr. Connie Chiang and author Tamiko Nimura to dialogue about their historical research on and artistic response to the legacy of U.S. Japanese Incarceration during World War II. Dr. Chiang will explore the idea of what it meant to be an American, how it became a question for people of Japanese Ancestry in America answered, at least partially, through the cultivation of rubber plants. Nimura with speak from her position as a descendent of survivors and how the story of Mitsuye Endo resonated with her so much so as to include her in her co-authored graphic novel We Hereby Refuse: Japanese American Resistance to Wartime Incarceration. The two presenters will then open up the event for dialogue, concluding with sales and signings of their books.
