Climate change and COVID have scientists interacting with the public like never before. With scientists playing a dual role as advocates in legislation, public health, and awareness, questions may arise if advocacy is a role scientists should take on. Come join this panel of experts who meld their scientific work with advocacy. This event is open to all, and free to join. 

This panel is hosted by Em Nocito, Graduate Liaison for the Natural Sciences and PhD Student in Environmental Studies. 

The panelists are:

Molly Gutlla, DrPH

Molly Gutilla, DrPH, joined the School of Public Health faculty at CSU in 2017, bringing extensive experience in public health research and practice, with particular focus on health equity, health in rural areas, methods of community health assessment, spatial and social epidemiology and research ethics. Dr. Gutilla’s goal is to be a “pracademic” – that is, to balance working in both research and practice.

Jonathan Berman, PhD

Jonathan Berman, PhD is an assistant professor of basic science at New York Institute of Technology (Arkansas campus). His research focuses on physiology and how humans control salt and water balances to regulate blood pressure. He was the co-chair for the 2017 March for Science, and authored the book Anti-vaxxers: How to challenge a misinformed movement.

Cassandra Brooks, PhD 

Cassandra Brooks, PhD is an assistant professor of environmental studies at University of Colorado- Boulder. Her research looks at the intersection of marine science, environmental policy, and public outreach, with a specific focus on Antarctica. She was a member of The Last Ocean, a large-scale media project dedicated to the Ross Sea in Antarctica. In addition to publishing scientific articles, she also produces policy papers and popular media.
