Values Affirmation: What It Is, Why It Matters and How to Use It in Your Classroom

Evan Anders, Doctoral Student, Astro-Planetary Science

Recent evidence suggests the achievement gap in STEM courses between underrepresented minority (URM) students and their white peers arises in part from stereotype threat, and that values affirmation exercises can help mitigate this achievement gap.

In this workshop, we will provide some background on values affirmation and recent research on the topic. Participants will have an opportunity to participate in a values affirmation exercise, and will be given some tools for helping guide their students in similar exercises.
