Abstract: Terrestrial biomes allow ecologists to make prediction of vegetative form and function as a function of climate across macro scales. These biomes have been linked to the freshwater habitats they are embedded in by the biome gradient framework, that recognizes terrestrial biomes have strong influences on freshwaters embedded in them, and that biomes in the real-world transition from one to another across climate gradients. Riparian vegetation plays as disproportionate role in mediating linkages between terrestrial and aquatic habitats, and provides key ecosystem services and controls upon biota and material transport. Riparian zones are generally wetter than the surrounding terrestrial uplands, and thus share characteristics with upland vegetation from nearby wetter biomes. The relationship of riparian vegetation with climate can allow prediction of some aspects of their function across broad climate gradients. These relationships will interact with a changing climate and other anthropogenic pressures to influence ecosystem services provided by riparian zones.
