The CU and broader publics are invited to a talk by the renowned German-Jewish historian Prof. Dr. Michael Brenner (Munich/Washington DC). His lecture will take place on Tues., Sept. 2, 5:00 pm (MT) in person at Norlin Library’s Center for British and Irish Studies (CBIS) Room, 5th floor [M549; 1720 Pleasant St, CU campus]. It will also be streamed on Zoom (register here). This is a public program. Everyone is welcome. No tickets required.

On Tuesday morning, there is also a special research colloquium on various aspects of Prof. Brenner’s influential work. For more information, please contact Prof. T. Pegelow Kaplan at Thomas.pegelow-kaplan@colorado.edu.

Prof. Brenner will explore the different ways in which German Jews of all backgrounds responded to the Nazi regime’s revocation of their equal rights as German citizens. What were German Jews' expectations of the new year 1933, and how did they react to the rapidly changing circumstances after Hitler was appointed Chancellor of Germany on January 30th of that year? What is the relevance of these events in the light of present threats to our own democracy?

Prof. Dr. Michael Brenner holds the chair of Jewish History and Culture at Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich, Germany. He is also Distinguished Professor of History and Seymour and Lillian Abensohn Chair in Israel Studies at American University in Washington, DC, and serves as International President of the Leo Baeck Institute for the Study of German-Jewish History. Born to Holocaust survivors in Germany shortly after the war and genocide, Brenner is one of the most influential scholars in German-Jewish history today. He received countless prizes and fellowships, including the Baron Award for Scholarly Excellence in Research of the Jewish Experience. Brenner is the author of ten, often path-breaking books, translated into over a dozen languages. His latest books are In Hitler’s Munich: Jews, the Revolution, and the Rise of Nazism, (Princeton University Press 2022) and In Search of Israel: The History of an Idea (Princeton University Press, 2018).

The visit by Prof. Brenner is co-sponsored by CU’s Department of History, Program in Jewish Studies, and the Louis P. Singer Chair in Jewish History.
