Womxn of Color Panel—2019 Semana de la Muxer
Join this panel featuring four prominent womxn of color: Lisa Calderón, Elisabeth Epps, Candi CdeBaca and Johanna Toruño.
They will speak on the struggles and triumphs and race and gender as professionals in their respective fields. The panel focuses on the lives and experiences of each woman and will highlight the ongoing struggle of justice that women and femmes fight for.
Lisa Calderón is a 2019 Denver Mayor Candidate, justice reform advocate, and non-profit executive. Calderón is currently a criminal justice professor at Regis University, holds four degrees, and is the co-chairwoman of the Colorado Latino Forum. Calderón is well known for her activism and work around domestic violence, criminal justice and anti-gentrification.
Elisabeth Epps is a prison abolitionist, activist, legal advocate, and analyst. She runs the Colorado Freedom Fund, an organization dedicated to bailing low-income individuals and people of color out of jail. The fund has helped over 150 people avoid incarceration due to indigence. Epps is heavily involved in the social justice movement in Denver is well respected by her community.
Candi CdeBaca is a policy expert, social worker, and community organizer. She is also the co-founder of Project VOYCE, an organization that develops transformational leaders in underrepresented communities. As a proud fifth-generation native of northeast Denver, she is well integrated in her community and understands the importance of community empowerment.
Johanna Toruño is a self-taught visual artist based out of New York City and the creator of the Unapologetically Series—a visual series utilizing public space for storytelling by queer people of color (QPOC) and people of color (POC). Raised in El Salvador and displaced by civil war in the U.S. when she was 10, Toruño believes QPOC/POC must tell their own stories in their own words.
